Tour Description
Our Portugal adventure is one that will take you to the edge of Europe. From parts of this trip explorers left to discover the "new world". You will explore the rural villages and seldom used roads by bicycle. There are gravel road options as well as our normal tarmac route. Portugal has some of the best foods and most beautiful roads of any of our adventures. We visit in the saddle seasons to avoid the tourist rush, although Portugal is off the main tour track even in peak season, and soak in more of the local flavor and atmosphere.
Trip Itinerary
Day One – Lisbon
Arrive in vibrant Lisbon and take time to explore its lively streets and historic charm. In the afternoon, we’ll visit two local breweries before gathering for dinner—either in a converted castle or at a cozy tapas restaurant.
Day Two – Ride Through Arrábida Nature Reserve (~30 miles)
After transferring to our castle lodging and fitting bikes, we’ll set out on our first ride. The Arrábida slopes offer sweeping views over the Tróia Peninsula and the Sado Estuary, with its lagoons, salt marshes, and birdlife. Our route leads to Setúbal, where we’ll enjoy fresh seafood paired with craft beer and wine.
Day Three – Sado Estuary & Rice Paddies (~45 miles)
Today’s ride follows the sea past fishing villages and rice fields, then winds through small communities and lagoons. The day ends at our evening stop, surrounded by the serene rhythm of estuary life.
Day Four – Seaside Riding to Porto Covo (~23 miles)
We’ll follow a narrow ribbon of road along the Atlantic, with stunning views of the vast blue ocean. The day ends in Porto Covo, a charming fishing village where sandy coves hide between rugged cliffs.
Day Five – Rest Day in Vila Nova de Milfontes
Take a break in this lovely beach town. Relax on golden sands, stroll the coast, or opt for a kayaking adventure if you’d like to explore by water.
Day Six – Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve (~57 miles)
As we continue south, the landscape grows wilder. The Costa Vicentina is marked by dramatic cliffs, deserted beaches, and rolling back roads used mostly by fishermen. Crossing from Alentejo into the Algarve, we’ll reach Aljezur, where a climb to the Moorish Castle rewards us with sweeping views.
Day Seven – The Sea & Lagos (~55 miles)
Our final riding day brings ochre cliffs, golden beaches, and the dramatic coastline near Sagres, once a hub of the Age of Discovery. From the southwestern tip of Europe, we ride along the seacoast toward Lagos, a town rich with maritime history and charm.
Day Eight – Departure from Lagos
Our journey concludes in Lagos. A shuttle back to Lisbon is available for those continuing their travels.
