BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG ADVENTURE
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Deep down we all know it. Belgium…is the best place to be a beer drinking cyclist. The Belgians are passionate about their cycling and even more passionate about their beer.
This tour will give you the complete Belgian experience. We may even find some time for Chips with Mayonnaise, moules et frites and quite possibly chocolate, as well as cobbles, hellingen and beer, lots of lovely beer.
You will have good rides in spectacular countryside. You will visit a small brewery or two along with visiting the home of Team Sky’s favourite celebratory Tour de France tipple…Leffe
You will travel to the UNESCO world heritage town of Leuven “The Place to Beer” and home to the beer innovation festival.
Mechelen and the Het Anker brewery and distillery will surprise you with its own hotel and a selection of beers specially chosen to compliment the food. You will also have the opportunity to visit one of the few distilleries in Belgium making Scotch Whisky.
A good days ride from there will take you via Geraadsbergen and the infamous Mur or wall to Oudenaarde. When this climb in Geraardsbergen was dropped from the Tour of Flanders a few years ago, the town held a funeral to morn its passing. It has now been reinstated, at least for the 2017 edition. There will be opportunity to try your hand at one or two of the other famous hellingen of Flanders as we make our way to Oudenaarde. In Oudenaarde there is the museum of cycling.
You can either end the tour in Oudenaarde with a shuttle arranged to Brussels or back to Luxembourg. You could also extend your stay in Belgium by using your bike or the train to visit the other great Belgian cities of Ghent and Brugges. Just let us know and we will happily offer some advice and help out where we can, but we head for Chimay! If you stay with the tour we will head south for 3 quite big days on the bike, a couple of trappist breweries and a return to Luxembourg
Day 1 - Luxembourg
Meet in Luxembourg collection from airport or train station is possible. We will be based in Dommeldange staying at the hotel used by all the major world tour teams when they visit this wonderful little country for the Tour of Luxembourg. We will check bikes and take a short shake out ride, visit a small craft brewery and have a craft beer sommelier organize a beer tasting before dinner at a local Italian restaurant. Stock up, you will need the energy for the days ahead.
Day 2 - Dommeldange to 'dAchouffe
This is a significant days riding through the Luxembourg and Belgian Ardennes but you don’t need to worry too much about riding on busy roads, we will be using the rather excellent piste cyclist system in Luxembourg and parts of the extensive cycle network in Belgium. It is however 1800m of climbing and 90km. We will get dinner in the Brasserie d’achouffe and will stay in a nearby hotel.
Day 3 - 'dAchouffe to Dinant
Assuming you did not drink too many of the rather lovely Chouffe beers (they are around 8 or 9%) we will be heading north passing WWII memorials and battle sites up to Dinant home of the Leffe Brewery. We will visit maison Leffe but this will mean a strong days riding, it is 100km and 1600m of ascent. We will need to average 20-25km/hour in order to make last orders on the visits.
Day 4 - Dinant to Leuven
Dinant to Leuven is another 100km day but with a little less ascent as we leave the Ardenne and head towards Flanders. Leuven in a very cool little town and you will get plenty of opportunity to look around its cultural sites as well as its many excellent beer bars.
Day 5 - Leuven to Mechelen
A morning chilling in Leuven, we will clean and lube your bikes for you while you explore or do your laundry and then its off to Mechelen and the Het Anker experience. This is not to be missed. We will be leaving after an early lunch or a late brunch if you prefer, for the short ride up the river to this amazing place. Brewery tour, whisky tour and a dinner with beer is included in the price.
Day 6 - Mechelen to Oudenaarde via Geraaldsbergen
Your chance to see what the pros put themselves through as they ride over 200km and around 20 classified hellingen, many with parts reaching 25-30%. We will spend the night in Oudenaarde. If time allows we will visit the museum today, if not then we will try to get there it in the morning. 90km and 700m
Day 7 - Oudenaarde
Our, farewell to some, day with a variety of closing options, we can organize a shuttle back to Luxembourg or on to Brussels, or we can leave you to head into the wonderful city of Ghent and enjoy a few days exploring on your own. For those staying on this is another rest day, you do the laundry, we do the bikes and we all visit the museum of cycling in Oudenaarde. We will take the train to Gent for a look around after the museum and eat in one of their highly rated restaurants. Then an early night. You can’t afford to start the next few days tired.
Day 8 - Oudenaarde to Chimay
For the hardened few. 3 Big days now ensue. These will be long days with lots of climbs but the rewards will be in visiting 2 of the best trappist beer monasteries and a return to Luxembourg under your own steam. Oudenaarde to Chimay, we will stay nearby and depending on time may be able to take a tour of the monastery and its brewery. Failing that there will be a photo opportunity for you, your bike, a beer and the gates to an iconic historic monastery/brewery. 130km and 1500m
Day 9 - Chimay to Orval
Another 130km day with around 2000m climbing takes through France (your 3rd country) and back into Belgium for a visit to the Orval monastery.
Day 10 - Orval to Luxembourg City
Our last day leaves Orval and with 75km and 1000m we head back into Luxembourg where you can either spend another night or catch your plane/train out.
All meals and lodging during the adventure. Guided routes. Cue Sheets and ride information We will be cycling as a group and our luggage will be transfered to the final hotel after we transfer our clothing and such into pannier bags.
